Road safety was the theme of SIAM-SAFE annual convention 2010 held in ChandigarhAnnual Convention of Society for Automobile Fitness & Environment (SAFE) - an initiative of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) - was organised at CII, Chandigarh yesterday. The event, which was organised in association with Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, Transport Department, Government of Haryana and Chandigarh Traffic Police, was themed ‘Growth with Responsibility: Ensuring Safety on Roads’.

The annual convention was inaugurated by Guest of Honour, Samir Mathur, Financial Commissioner & Principal Secretary-Transport, Government of Haryana along with other dignitaries and bureaucrats from the ministry who were present at the inaugural function. Dr. Pawan Goenka, president SIAM & president Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. and Harjeet Singh, president, SAFE & A -VP, Hero Honda Motors Ltd. were also part of the inaugural ceremony to share insight about SAFE initiatives.

In the inaugural session Dr. Dan Greenbaum, President, Health Effect Institute, USA spoke about the enhancement of vehicle stewardship for emissions. In the Plenary Session on Best Practices adopted by enforcement departments, Satyendra Garg, Joint Commissioner of Police - Traffic, Delhi Traffic Police, detailed efforts by Delhi Traffic Police to plan traffic and ensure road safety. Kulwant Singh, DSP, Chandigarh Traffic Police also shared the practices adopted by the Chandigarh Traffic Police for better traffic planning and road safety. In another session focussed on Accident Analysis: Preventing Road Fatalities, Dr. Nishi Mittal, head Traffic Engineering & Safety, CRRI shared analysis procedures on the road traffic accident recording. Amit Arora, project officer, Commonwealth Organizing Committee, presented a case study on GIS application in accident analysis. Ravishankar Rajaraman, project manager, J P Research India Pvt. Ltd. shared his data on the crash investigation. In a separate discussion on safety on roads through enforcement & technology Paolo Squillante, project manager, Thetis SpA, Italy shared the ITS key application for sustainable mobility and safety on roads. Vipul Sharma, Senior Consultant, Steria spoke about the promoting safety through telematics.

Representatives from different automotive companies shared their knowledge, experiences and practices followed to make roads safer for the people. There was also a panel of dignitaries from Haryana and Andhra Pradesh Governments, Delhi Traffic Police, TRIPP and SAFE to discuss the steps to be taken to reduce fatalities on our roads.

Dr. Pawan Goenka, president SIAM said, “Road Safety has been always the priority for the Indian Automobile Manufacturers and for this we are trying to align with the government to make our roads more safe and keep our environment green."

Dilip Chenoy, director general, SIAM said, “SIAM is actively involved to educate the masses about significance of road safety in India. Through our special initiative SAFE we have taken this forward and have incorporated experts’ views from developed countries that have benefited from enforcement and have achieved significant fall in number of road accidents.”

Harjeet Singh, president-SAFE and associate vice-president, Hero Honda said, “With industry experts from India and outside and informative discussions on illuminating topics, SAFE annual convention 2010 was accomplished. I am thankful to the respective authorities and Haryana Government to have provided enough support to carry out our endeavour towards increasing awareness about road safety and curbing roads hazards.”

This event registered a significant footfall from representatives of the ministries, transport, police, environment, auto components and automobile manufacturers, academicians, students, NGOs and others working for improvement of environment and road safety.
