India’s first ever international cycling event, BSA Hercules India Cyclothon and Being Human Tour De Mumbai - Mumbai Cyclothon, held today morning at Bandra Reclamation, received tremendous response, with enthusiasts from all walks of life such as international cyclists, national cyclists, amateur cyclists, cycling aficionados, working professionals, housewives and school children participating, thereby adding color and fervour to the whole experience. Organized by Sport18, the sports marketing division of the Network18 group and ID Sports – a sports management company, the event also witnessed participation from a host of celebrities, government officials, officials from International Cycling Union (UCI), Cycling Federation of India (CFI), Maharashtra Cycling Association (MCA) and Corporates.
The Nokia Green Ride (12km), The Tata Kids Ride (2km) The Amateur Ride categories (24km) and The Corporate Ride both (24 km) saw 4000, over 500 and 2500 no. of cyclist respectively. With the more professional categories like the National Elite Ride (50km) and the international Elite Ride (100 km) saw huge participation in number with 22 teams and 10 teams taking part in the national and international riding categories..
“The fantastic response we received through the BSA Hercules India cyclothon held in Mumbai today is a stepping stone towards putting India on the international cycling map. Such events will boost our country’s efforts to contribute further to a healthier and greener world which we, as a developing nation, aim to achieve.” says Dr. Raghuram, president, TI Cycles.
The best riders from the Elite Men National category will be trained under the guidance of John Gloster, Director – ID Sports and physio – Rajasthan Royals to compete with international riders in the near future. The race and selection of riders was governed by David McQuaid, Race director for the event.
“Our main aim of promoting cycling through the Being Human Tour De Mumbai - Mumbai Cyclothon is to bring professional international cycling to India. Moreover it’s the best and easiest way to keep your heart healthy and fight the increasing risk of heart diseases that seems to be plaguing our people at a very young age”, says Dr. Akil Khan, chairman and managing director, ID sports, adding a health and fitness dimension to this event. On this occasion, ID Sports launched India’s first healthcare online portal, Topdoctorsonline.com that intends to enable rural India to have access to the best doctors in the country through the portal.
Speaking at this event, Satish Menon, CEO of Sport18 said, “The BSA Hercules India Cyclothon - Mumbai chapter provided the amateur riders an excellent opportunity to cycle on the Mumbai’s latest landmark – The Bandra-Worli Sea Link, thus inspiring and motivating a lot of the youngsters to consider the sport seriously. In the coming years, we intend to take the India Cyclothon nation-wide, and contribute towards a healthy and pollution-free India.”
Endorsed by the cycling legend, Eddy Merckx, a five-time Tour De France winner and recipient of the highest honors in cycling, the cyclothon was guided under the medical supervision of John Gloster, Physio – Rajasthan Royals and Victor Popov, five-time official physio of Tour De France and consultant physio to the Australian Cricket Team.
David McQuaid, Race Director – UCI said, “I am delighted to see such an overwhelming response in India for cycling as a sport. This event has been executed in an excellent way by the organizers – Sport 18 and ID Sports. This is the first time UCI has permitted for an international race in India and I am very happy to direct the same.”
In addition to TI Cycles as the title sponsor for Mumbai Cyclothon, various other Corporates extended their association and participation in the event. Some of leading brands from corporate India namely Provogue, Union Bank of India,ICICI Lombard Health Insurance, Tata Group, Gitanjali, Reebok, Gatorade, Nature Valley, Volini, Nokia, Lilavati, Times of India, Bisleri, Gold’s Gym, Trident, MTV, CNBC-TV18,CNN-IBN, Bright Outdoors, Lilavati Hospitals, Topspin and John Gloster were on-board as partners. The KBS foundation in an indication of its support to cyclothon organized a Car-Free Day at Carter Road today. Partners like Red FM, Cinemax, Reebok and Café Coffee Day in the lead up to the event engaged with their consumers through in-house promotional activities.
