On the sidelines of inaugurating a new dealership outlet in Kolkata, Ford Motor has told reporters that it will be launching new models or a new variant of its existing models after every 12-18 months.
Michael Boneham, president & managing director, Ford India, said "We now have a marketshare of nearly 2 per cent and would like to scale it up in the coming years. Launching of new cars or variants from the Ford stable, will play a crucial role in growing our market share in India." He, however, declined to mention its future product launches, except that it will introduce its first small car ‘Figo’ by early next year. He also refused to divulge what sort of marketshare the company aims to achieve in the long run.
After ramping up its dealership network by 50 per cent over the last 15 months, the company is aiming at breaching the 150-mark by the end of this calendar year. “We currently have 139 dealerships in India and this number will go up to 159 by year-end,” Michael Boneham said.
Boneham also categorically assured that while the pricing of the Figo would be ‘extremely competitive’, the company is pulling out all stops to ensure that the life-cycle cost of the vehicle would be substantially low. “For the buyer, the initial price of the car is not the only thing. They will also look at the cost component in the longer term. Overall, we want to create unbelievable value for money for a Figo owner,” he said. The sub-4 meter long Figo would be available in 1.2 litre petrol and a sub 1.5 litre diesel variant, and would be exported from India to countries in the Asia Pacific region and Africa, Boneham said. Figo is expected by the first quarter of calender 2010 and the vehicle would be exported to Asia Pacific and Africa along with sales in India.
