The Indian auto industry is experiencing a peculiar trend in its sales figures these days. A quick analysis of the sales from January to June 2009 shows some interesting facts. Maruti Suzuki, which flaunts over 13 passenger vehicles, has found its compact superstar Alto bringing in nearly 30 per cent of its overall sales in this period. Hyundai, which has over 10 vehicles in its portfolio, has found i10 bringing in more than 48 per cent of its sales in the same period. For Tata Motors, Indica has maintained its record of garnering around 50 per cent of Tata Motors’s sales.
It is no wonder that other automobile companies are looking to hit at the wonder model to boost its sales these days. There is now news that India Yamaha Private Limited is drawing up plans to roll out its gearless scooters targetted at women riders. Precious little is presently known about it, but Mint writes that the scooter would have ‘Yamaha DNA' code for sporty, stylish looks and would be built on an existing platform.
The paper says that Yamaha India aims to clock sell 200,000 units a year of the proposed scooter within five years of the launch. Once launched, it would be pitted against Hero Honda Pleasure, TVS Scooty and Honda Activa, which are also targeted at the non-male segment. After adding 100 dealers last year, the company plans to add another 150 outlets in 2009, taking the total to 550 across India.
Besides, there is a lot of buzz that India Yamaha Motors is planning to launch higher capacity Fazer motorcycle in India, to take on the newly launched Bajaj Pulsar 220 DTSi. Though no official comments were offered by the company, dealers have claimed that the new bike is expected to have a 250cc four stroke engine and is expected to dethrone Pulsar 220 as the Fastest Indian. While the engine configuration and other information is not yet available, India Yamaha Motors is expected to turn to its global portfolio for this launch, where it has a 250cc 4st street motorcycle, known as Fazer/YBR 250 and is currently being sold in several countries.
According to a bike enthusiast who did not wished to be named, “Yamaha is quite bullish on its FZ-16 platform and has already rolled out – FZ-S and Fazer variants. The new Fazer could come with extra power to counter the fastest motorcycle Bajaj Pulsar 220cc. While R15 with performance kit could outperform the Bajaj Pulsar’s claimed top speed of 144kmph,” Yamaha wants a street motorcycle to dethrone Bajaj Pulsar 220cc, as revealed by the enthusiast.
Mint also reports that in order to enhance its marketshare from a minuscule 2.7 per cent to the double-digit market, the company has planned a three-pronged approach that includes focusing on the 125cc (by engine capacity) segment, launching a gearless scooter and ramping up its exports of motorcycles to South America and Africa.
Last year, the company exported 38,537 bikes and now it is eyeing to take this up to 150,000 by next fiscal. In addition to motorcycles, Yamaha also plans to ship between 8,000 and 10,000 engines every year to Indonesia.
