Discerning the growing popularity of superbikes in India where numerous multinational two-wheeler companies like Yamaha, Suzuki Motor Corp., Kawasaki and Ducati have already been aggressively launching or bringing in new models from overseas for sales in India, another leading name - BMW is also giving it a serious thought to foray in the segment as well.
After riding high on its phenomenal sales of its luxury cars for the past few quarters, it is learnt that BMW could be considering importing its array of bikes in the country, but not in the near or medium term, as reported exclusively by a leading business channel, ET Now. Though nothing as been finalised yet, it is widely believed that the Munich-based company has analysed the burgeoning demand for big bikes, thereby propelling the company to do a feasibility study on it. Due to the steep import duties levied by the government on CBUs, the bikes price is estimated to be around Rs. 10 lakh.
A senior representative of BMW India has told ET Now that it is holding exploratory talks with its parent company’s motorcycle arm and will elicit a feedback in due course of time.
It is to be mentioned that BMW Motorrad is a brand used by German company BMW for its motorcycles, which have been manufactured since 1923 and is a business unit within corporate and brand development division of BMW. BMW Motorrad’s G series, F series, R series and K series are available around the world. These bikes range from 450cc capacity to 1300cc capacity and are designed for off road, sport and touring purposes.
