For the fear of diluting its brand image in the retail market, Mahindra & Mahindra is reported to have refused to supply 250 Logan for taxi use in Mumbai. Following a state government order, Mahindra Logan was the vehicle that has found favour with the taximen of the city as against other vehicles like Santro, WagonR, Alto and the likes for reasons of the space it offers and the price point at which it is available. It is believed that M&M is still open to it being used as an AC taxi which any way is being used in several quarters. But it doesnot want its vehicle Logan to be painted black and yellow. The Logan was being considered as a replacement to the 25-year-old Fiat Premier Padmini that has so far being used on the city roads. The taxi association has advocated reason like that no other small car offers luggage space which they are looking for use as taxis. Also, cars like Maruti SX4, Hyundai Accent and Ford Ikon is purportedly out of their budget.
The taxi owners have moved ahead and filed a PIL seeking relief from the government asking for relief from professional tax and in toll and octroi for the new vehicles so that they could be made cheaper. A government-appointed committee has recorded statements from all taxi-men and will be giving its reply on January 8, 2009.
