According to Times of India, Renault Motors would be designing the entry-level low cost car (codenamed ULC) that it going to be rolled out jointly with Nissan Motors and Bajaj Auto from Chakan unit in Maharashtra by 2011. It has also been learnt that the final shape of the car has already been decided and the French automaker's team will continue its styling until its production. The finishing touches of its design are tipped to be done by the Boulogne-Billancourt-based company's Mumbai design centre. The car, is anticipated to rival the Tata Nano in price and specification, though nothing has been claimed by Bajaj yet.
According to a senior representative of Renault India who requested anonymity, the design suggested by Renault was chosen and it has frozen the styling of the car and has decided its final shape. He concluded by saying that Renault's team will now continue the styling till production.
Renault India Private Limited , on September 24, 2008, has inaugurated a new high-security design facility in Mumbai, that will work in tandem with the company's other designing centres located in France, South Korea, Brazil etc. This is the third design studio Renault has globally opened this year. The company opened one in Sao Paulo in Brazil and one in Bucharest in Rumania during 2008 and has now five design centres globally. Within the next couple of years, there will be an expansion of design work in India as the company plans to have a design facility in Chennai too which will be closely working along with its production team.
As reported earlier, In June'08, Bajaj-Renault-Nissan had announced a joint venture for the ULC project, with Bajaj Auto holding a 50 per cent stake and 25 per cent each by Renault and Nissan. The partners are looking at an initial sales target of 400,000 units per year. The Renault-Nissan-Bajaj consortium is awaiting market response for the Tata Nano to decide on the final specifications of the project, as claimed by sources.
